Cancelled flight
Key factors
Notice timing, cause and alternative travel
Coverage
Canada, Saudi Arabia, UK, EU, Türkiye, Oman, Thailand, Mexico and India
Possible rights
Compensation, refund, rerouting and care
Eligibility depends on the actual journey and passenger-rights rules that apply.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
You may be entitled to compensation after a flight cancellation, but a cancellation does not automatically create a fixed payment. The applicable passenger-rights rules that apply, notice period, reason for the cancellation and any replacement journey offered can all change the result.

Passenger rights
Your rights depend on the journey
Cancellation rules vary significantly by market. Notice timing, the cause of the cancellation, the replacement journey offered and the passenger's choice between refund or alternative travel can all affect compensation.
Canada
APPR
CAD 125–1,000
For qualifying cancellations within the airline's control and not required for safety, compensation can depend on airline size and how late you ultimately reach the final destination.
Saudi Arabia
GACA
50%–150% of remaining ticket value
If an eligible cancellation occurs and you do not accept an alternative flight, compensation depends on how close to departure the airline informed you.
United Kingdom
UK261
£220–£520
Fixed compensation can apply when the cancellation is communicated less than 14 days before departure and the replacement journey does not fall within the permitted timing exceptions.
European Union
EC261
€250–€600
Current EC261 can provide fixed compensation for qualifying cancellations notified less than 14 days before departure, subject to rerouting and extraordinary-circumstance rules.
Türkiye
SHY-YOLCU
TRY equivalent of €100–€600
SHY-YOLCU uses cancellation-notice and rerouting rules similar in structure to EC261, with compensation converted into Turkish lira when paid.
Oman
Oman CAA
OMR 108–260 for qualifying international cases
Qualifying international cancellations use distance-based compensation, while domestic cancellations have separate notice and alternative-flight rules.
Thailand
CAAT 101
THB 1,500 domestic; THB 2,000–4,500 international
Cancellation compensation depends on whether the flight is domestic or international, with notice, replacement timing and extraordinary circumstances affecting the result.
Mexico
Mexico LAC
At least 25% with specified remedies
For a cancellation attributable to the airline, passengers can choose among a refund, first-available substitute travel with care, or later travel. The refund and later-travel options include at least 25% compensation.
India
India DGCA
Up to INR 5,000 / 7,500 / 10,000
Qualifying airline-controlled short-notice cancellations can result in capped compensation measured against the booked one-way basic fare plus fuel charge; an acceptable alternative flight can change the outcome.
Compensation
How compensation can differ
Cancellation compensation cannot be assessed from the word 'cancelled' alone. When the cancellation was announced, why it happened and what replacement journey was offered are central to the assessment.
Cancelled flight compensation at a glance
Cancellation compensation works differently across the passenger-rights rules Travaro supports. Notice timing, alternative travel, the cause of the cancellation and the applicable jurisdiction can all affect the outcome.

Eligibility
What determines whether compensation applies?
These are the main factors Travaro checks when assessing a cancelled flight across the passenger-rights rules currently supported.
When you were informed matters
Advance notice can determine whether fixed compensation applies. UK261, EC261 and SHY-YOLCU use important 14-day and 7-day thresholds, while Saudi GACA uses its own 60-day, 14-day and 24-hour bands.
The cause of the cancellation matters
Weather, air traffic restrictions, security events, technical issues and operational decisions can be treated differently. The applicable legal test depends on the jurisdiction.
Alternative travel can change compensation
A sufficiently well-timed replacement flight can remove or reduce compensation under some frameworks. The departure and final-arrival times of the alternative journey therefore matter.
Refund and compensation are different rights
Receiving the unused ticket price back does not necessarily answer whether separate compensation is also payable. The two rights must be assessed independently under the applicable framework.
The whole connected journey can matter
Where flights form one protected connecting itinerary, cancellation of one leg can trigger rights relating to the remaining journey, rerouting or a return to the original point of departure.
Care rights can continue while you wait
Meals, refreshments, communications, hotel accommodation and airport transport can be required in qualifying circumstances while you wait for alternative travel.
During the disruption
A cancellation can give you more than compensation
Fixed compensation is only one part of passenger protection. Depending on the applicable rules and what you choose to do, the airline can also have obligations concerning your ticket, replacement travel and immediate care.
You may be entitled to rerouting to your destination at the earliest reasonable opportunity.
You may have the option to receive a refund instead of continuing the journey.
If a connected journey no longer serves its purpose, return-to-origin rights can apply under some frameworks.
Meals, refreshments and communications may be required while you wait.
Hotel accommodation and airport transport can apply where replacement travel requires an overnight stay.
Keep receipts for reasonable expenses if the airline does not provide required care directly.
Before you claim
What should you keep?
Cancellation claims often turn on exactly when the airline notified you and what alternative journey was offered, so preserving those records is particularly important.
Your original booking confirmation and complete itinerary.
The airline's cancellation email, text message or app notification showing when you were informed.
Details and timings of every replacement flight or rerouting option offered.
Any explanation the airline provided for why the flight was cancelled.
Proof of the journey you eventually took and your final arrival time.
Itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation or local transport expenses where relevant.
