Air Canada compensation guide
The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
You may be entitled to compensation for an eligible Air Canada delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. Flights to, from and within Canada can fall under the APPR. Depending on the direction of travel and operating carrier, GACA, SHY-YOLCU, UK261 or EC261 can also apply.

Passenger rights
Which passenger rights could apply?
Air Canada is a Canadian carrier, but that does not mean every Air Canada claim is decided only under Canadian law. The departure point, arrival point and operating carrier determine which passenger-rights framework can apply.
Canada
APPR
Delay/cancellation: CAD 400–1,000 · Denied boarding: CAD 900–2,400
Flights to, from or within Canada can fall under the APPR, including connecting itineraries. Air Canada is currently classified as a large Canadian airline, so the large-carrier compensation tiers apply where the other APPR conditions are met.

EC261
Up to €600 in qualifying cases
An Air Canada-operated flight departing from an EU airport can fall under EC261. An Air Canada-operated flight arriving in the EU from outside the EU is generally not covered by EC261 because Air Canada is a non-EU carrier.

GACA
GACA rights on qualifying Saudi departures
An Air Canada-operated flight departing from a Saudi Arabian airport can fall under GACA because the Saudi passenger-rights rules cover departures by both national and foreign carriers. An Air Canada-operated flight arriving in Saudi Arabia from abroad is generally not covered by the full GACA passenger-rights regime.

SHY-YOLCU
SHY-YOLCU rights on qualifying Türkiye departures
An Air Canada-operated flight departing from Türkiye can fall under SHY-YOLCU because the rules cover foreign carriers departing Turkish airports. An Air Canada-operated flight arriving in Türkiye from abroad is generally outside SHY-YOLCU's foreign-carrier scope.

UK261
Up to £520 in qualifying cases
An Air Canada-operated flight departing from the UK can fall under UK261. An Air Canada-operated flight arriving in the UK from outside the UK is generally not covered by UK261 because Air Canada is not a UK or EU carrier.

CAAT 101
THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases
Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled Air Canada departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

Mexico LAC
Ticket-price percentages and statutory remedies in qualifying cases
Air Canada operates passenger services involving Mexico. On qualifying services governed by Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, airline-attributable delays, cancellations and overbooking can trigger statutory assistance, refund or alternative-travel remedies and percentage-based compensation.

India DGCA
Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits
India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

What happened to your Air Canada flight?
Delayed flight
A significant arrival delay may qualify depending on the route, applicable passenger-rights rules and cause of the disruption.
Cancelled flight
Cancellation rights can depend on notice timing, the reason for cancellation and any alternative journey offered.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can create compensation, alternative travel, refund and care rights in qualifying circumstances.
Missed connection
A connecting journey booked as one itinerary may qualify when a disruption causes you to reach your final destination significantly late.
Important conditions
What can affect your eligibility?
An Air Canada flight number by itself is not enough to determine compensation. These are the main details Travaro checks before applying the relevant passenger-rights rules.
The operating carrier matters
Codeshare bookings can display more than one airline. Passenger-rights coverage can depend on which airline actually operated the disrupted flight, so the operating carrier should be confirmed from the itinerary.
The route determines the legal framework
A journey to or from Canada can fall under APPR. An Air Canada-operated departure from Saudi Arabia can also fall under GACA, a departure from Türkiye can fall under SHY-YOLCU, and departures from qualifying EU or UK airports can bring EC261 or UK261 into scope.
Final arrival delay can determine the amount
For qualifying APPR delay and cancellation claims, the compensation tier depends on how late you ultimately reach the final destination shown on your original ticket.
The cause of the disruption matters
Under APPR, fixed compensation for an ordinary delay or cancellation generally requires the disruption to be within the airline's control and not required for safety. Outside-control events are treated differently.
Cancellation notice timing matters
Advance notice can affect whether fixed cancellation compensation applies. The detailed notice and rerouting tests differ between APPR, UK261 and EC261.
Connections can be assessed as one journey
If your flights form a protected connecting itinerary, disruption on one segment can be assessed by its effect on arrival at the final destination rather than only the delay on that individual flight.
Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101
Qualifying scheduled Air Canada departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.
Mexico's Civil Aviation Law can apply on qualifying Mexico services
Air Canada services involving Mexico can also need to be assessed under Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, including the airline's registered compensation policy for attributable delays and the statutory remedies that apply after serious delays, cancellations or overbooking.
India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules
Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
What to keep
Keep a clear record of the journey
Airline compensation claims are easier to assess when the route, operating carrier, disruption reason and final arrival time can all be established from the documents you keep.
Your booking confirmation showing the complete itinerary and ticket number.
Boarding passes or other proof of travel for each flight segment.
The operating carrier and flight number for the disrupted segment, particularly on a codeshare journey.
Air Canada emails, text messages or app notifications showing the delay or cancellation.
Any explanation provided for the cause of the disruption.
Details and timings of replacement flights or rerouting offered by the airline.
Your actual arrival time at the final destination.
Itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation or local transport expenses where relevant.
