Air India compensation guide
The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
You may be entitled to compensation or other passenger rights after an eligible Air India delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. India DGCA is central to qualifying Indian journeys, while Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Saudi Arabia may involve additional rules; route, direction of travel and operating carrier are important when determining which rules apply.

Passenger rights
Which passenger rights could apply?
Air India operates a large international network from India to Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Saudi Arabia and other regions. India’s DGCA framework is important for qualifying Air India-operated flights within, to and from India; other frameworks can also apply by route. Departure airport, destination, operating carrier, booking structure and direction of travel all matter.
Canada
APPR
Compensation can apply in qualifying cases
Air India operates services involving Toronto and Vancouver. Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations apply broadly to flights to, from and within Canada, so qualifying Air India journeys can fall within APPR.

EC261
€250–€600 in qualifying cases
Air India serves multiple European Union airports. Qualifying Air India-operated flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall under EU passenger-rights rules. Because Air India is not an EU carrier, an inbound flight from India is not covered merely because it lands in the EU.

UK261
£220–£520 in qualifying cases
Air India operates services involving London and Birmingham. Qualifying Air India-operated departures from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261.

GACA
Passenger rights can apply on qualifying Saudi departures
Air India's international network includes Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Qualifying departures from Saudi Arabia can therefore fall within Saudi Arabia's passenger-rights framework.

CAAT 101
THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases
Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled Air India departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

What happened to your Air India flight?
Delayed flight
A significant arrival delay may qualify depending on the route, applicable passenger-rights rules and cause of the disruption.
Cancelled flight
Cancellation rights can depend on notice timing, the reason for cancellation and any alternative journey offered.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can create compensation, alternative travel, refund and care rights in qualifying circumstances.
Missed connection
A connecting journey booked as one itinerary may qualify when a disruption causes you to reach your final destination significantly late.
Important conditions
What can affect your eligibility?
Air India is a non-EU and non-UK airline with a substantial international network. The same Air India passenger can therefore encounter different passenger-rights systems depending on where the journey begins, which airline operates the affected sector and how the itinerary is structured.
Canada journeys can fall under APPR
Air India operates directly to Toronto and Vancouver. Qualifying flights to or from Canada can therefore fall within Canada's passenger-rights framework.
EU departures can fall under EC261
Because Air India is a non-EU carrier, qualifying departures from EU airports can be protected by EC261. An Air India flight departing India for Europe does not gain EC261 protection solely because it lands in the EU.
UK departures can fall under UK261
Qualifying Air India flights departing from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261. Air India serves the UK through London and Birmingham routes.
Saudi departures can fall under GACA
Air India serves Saudi Arabia through destinations including Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Qualifying Saudi departures can therefore bring GACA passenger-rights protections into scope.
Direction of travel matters
An Air India flight departing Europe or the United Kingdom can have different regulatory coverage from the reverse flight departing India.
Connections in India require the full itinerary
Air India carries passengers through major Indian hubs to onward domestic and international destinations. Whether flights were booked together, which sector was disrupted and the final-arrival delay can all affect the assessment.
Partner flights must be identified
Air India works with other airlines and sells connecting itineraries. Passenger-rights coverage can depend on the carrier that physically operated the disrupted sector.
Türkiye is not a primary Air India route case
Air India's current own-operated international route map does not list Türkiye. If an Air India booking contains a partner-operated Turkish sector, the actual operating carrier and itinerary should be assessed separately.
Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101
Qualifying scheduled Air India departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.
