American Airlines compensation guide
The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
You may be entitled to compensation or other passenger rights after an eligible American Airlines delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. American serves Canada, the United Kingdom and European destinations, making your route, direction of travel, final arrival delay and actual operating carrier important when determining which rules apply.

Passenger rights
Which passenger rights could apply?
American Airlines is a U.S. carrier with a large international network. Its home country alone does not determine your passenger rights. Flights involving Canada can fall under APPR, while American-operated departures from protected European Union or United Kingdom airports can bring EC261 or UK261 into scope.
Canada
APPR
Delay/cancellation: CAD 400–1,000 · Denied boarding: CAD 900–2,400
American operates flights involving Canada. Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations apply broadly to qualifying flights to, from and within Canada, including those operated by foreign airlines such as American.

EC261
€250–€600 in qualifying cases
Qualifying American-operated flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall under European passenger-rights rules. Because American is not an EU carrier, an American-operated flight departing outside the covered European area is not brought into EC261 merely because it arrives there.

UK261
£220–£520 in qualifying cases
American-operated departures from United Kingdom airports can fall under UK261. Because American is not a UK carrier, an inbound American-operated flight departing outside the UK is not covered merely because it lands in the United Kingdom.

Mexico LAC
Ticket-price percentages and statutory remedies in qualifying cases
American Airlines operates passenger services involving Mexico. On qualifying services governed by Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, airline-attributable delays, cancellations and overbooking can trigger statutory assistance, refund or alternative-travel remedies and percentage-based compensation.

India DGCA
Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits
India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

What happened to your American Airlines flight?
Delayed flight
A significant arrival delay may qualify depending on the route, applicable passenger-rights rules and cause of the disruption.
Cancelled flight
Cancellation rights can depend on notice timing, the reason for cancellation and any alternative journey offered.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can create compensation, alternative travel, refund and care rights in qualifying circumstances.
Missed connection
A connecting journey booked as one itinerary may qualify when a disruption causes you to reach your final destination significantly late.
Important conditions
What can affect your eligibility?
The American Airlines name alone does not determine whether compensation applies. Travaro checks the complete itinerary, direction of travel, operating carrier, disruption circumstances and final arrival delay before determining which passenger-rights framework may be relevant.
Direction of travel matters
For a non-European and non-UK airline such as American, direction of travel is especially important. An American-operated departure from a protected EU or UK airport can fall within EC261 or UK261 even where the corresponding flight departing the United States may be treated differently.
Canada has broader route coverage
APPR can apply to qualifying flights to, from and within Canada regardless of whether the airline is Canadian. American journeys involving Canadian airports can therefore fall within the Canadian framework.
The operating carrier matters
American sells codeshare and partner journeys, including itineraries involving other oneworld airlines. The actual operating carrier of the disrupted flight can affect which passenger-rights rules apply.
The cause of the disruption matters
Not every delay or cancellation creates a right to fixed compensation. Weather, air traffic restrictions and other circumstances outside the airline's control can be treated differently from disruptions attributable to the carrier.
Final arrival delay can be decisive
Many compensation assessments focus on when you ultimately reached the final destination on the protected itinerary rather than only how late the disrupted flight departed.
Connections require the full booking
When a disruption causes a missed connection, the booking structure, operating airlines, route and final arrival delay all need to be considered rather than assessing one flight number in isolation.
Mexico's Civil Aviation Law can apply on qualifying Mexico services
American Airlines services involving Mexico can also need to be assessed under Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, including the airline's registered compensation policy for attributable delays and the statutory remedies that apply after serious delays, cancellations or overbooking.
India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules
Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
