Avianca compensation guide
The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
A qualifying Avianca (AV) flight disruption can create compensation, rerouting, refund or care rights under EC261, UK261, APPR and Mexico LAC. Eligibility depends on which airline actually operated the flight, its departure and destination, the cause and timing of the disruption and the specific regulation.

Passenger rights
Which passenger rights could apply?
Avianca operates passenger routes linking Colombia with European Union airports, London, Canada and Mexico. Departures from the EU or UK can bring EC261 or UK261; Canada services may engage APPR and qualifying Mexico journeys may engage Mexico LAC. Every framework has distinct geographic, operating-carrier and disruption conditions.
European Union / EEA
EC261
€250–€600 in qualifying cases
Avianca operates flights from Madrid and other EU airports. Qualifying Avianca-operated departures from EU/EEA airports may be protected by EC261; an inbound flight from Colombia is not covered merely because it lands in the EU on a non-EU carrier.

UK261
£220–£520 in qualifying cases
Avianca operates its own Bogotá–London Heathrow service. Its qualifying UK departures, including London–Bogotá, can fall under UK261. Inbound trips from Colombia are not automatically covered by UK261 for this non-UK carrier.

APPR
APPR rights on qualifying Canada routes
Avianca operates flights involving Canadian airports, including Toronto–Bogotá. The APPR may apply to qualifying flights to, from or within Canada, depending on cause and other conditions.

Mexico LAC
Ticket-price percentages and statutory remedies in qualifying cases
Avianca operates services involving Mexico, including Mexico City. Qualifying Mexico services may engage Mexico's Civil Aviation Law; actual operator and attributable-cause conditions must be verified.

What happened to your Avianca flight?
Delayed flight
A significant arrival delay may qualify depending on the route, applicable passenger-rights rules and cause of the disruption.
Cancelled flight
Cancellation rights can depend on notice timing, the reason for cancellation and any alternative journey offered.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can create compensation, alternative travel, refund and care rights in qualifying circumstances.
Missed connection
A connecting journey booked as one itinerary may qualify when a disruption causes you to reach your final destination significantly late.
Important conditions
What can affect your eligibility?
Avianca does not have one worldwide compensation rule. Each relevant flight must meet the conditions of its applicable framework. The network and flight operator may vary by travel date or connection.
Protected European departures can qualify under EC261
EC261 has its own disruption, delay, operating-carrier and other eligibility conditions; arrival from a third country on a non-EU carrier is not enough.
Qualifying UK departures can fall under UK261
UK261 has its own departure, notice, disruption and operating-carrier tests; an inbound third-country flight on a non-UK/non-EU carrier is assessed differently.
Canada journeys can engage APPR
APPR applies to qualifying flights to, from and within Canada. Cause, airline responsibility, size and other conditions determine remedies.
Mexico has airline-attributable delay and cancellation remedies
For airline-attributable delays of more than one but less than four hours the registered airline policy applies; more than two but less than four hours carries a statutory 7.5% ticket-price minimum. An attributable delay exceeding four hours, a qualifying cancellation or involuntary overbooking may trigger statutory refund or alternative-travel choices; qualifying refund or later-travel options can carry at least 25% additional compensation.
Identify the real operating carrier
Avianca AV and airlines associated with its wider business group or Star Alliance are not automatically the same operator. A codeshare sold by a partner is not proof that the partner flew the sector; confirm the actual AV-operated flight.
Journey direction and connections matter
The airport where the affected sector departed, whether the whole connection was on one booking and the actual final arrival time may change the assessment.
Disruption cause and alternative travel matter
Compensation is not automatic. The length and cause of a delay, cancellation notice, offered alternatives and documentation affect eligibility.
What to keep
Keep a clear record of the journey
Keep enough evidence to confirm the full Avianca journey, the airline that actually operated each leg and what happened.
Your Avianca booking confirmation, travel dates and ticket.
The full flight number, including AV where appropriate.
Boarding pass for every affected sector.
The airline actually operating each flight, especially codeshares and connections.
The airline’s delay, cancellation or denied-boarding messages.
Any stated disruption cause and notification time.
The actual arrival time at the protected final destination.
Rerouting, refund and replacement-flight confirmations.
Receipts for reasonable expenses where the applicable rules allow recovery.
