The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.

Quick answer

Could your flight qualify?

You may be entitled to compensation or other passenger rights after an eligible Cathay Pacific delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. Cathay serves Canada, the UK and numerous European cities directly, making route, direction of travel and operating carrier important when determining which rules apply.

Passenger rights

Which passenger rights could apply?

Cathay Pacific connects Hong Kong with Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East and many other markets. The airline's home jurisdiction does not by itself determine your passenger rights. Departure airport, destination, operating carrier, booking structure and direction of travel all need to be considered.

Canada

APPR

Compensation can apply in qualifying cases

Cathay Pacific operates services involving Vancouver and Toronto. Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations apply broadly to flights to, from and within Canada, so qualifying Cathay Pacific journeys can fall within APPR.

European Union

EC261

€250–€600 in qualifying cases

Cathay Pacific operates to multiple European destinations. Qualifying Cathay Pacific-operated flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall under EU passenger-rights rules. Because Cathay Pacific is not an EU carrier, an inbound flight from outside the EU is not covered merely because it lands in the EU.

United Kingdom

UK261

£220–£520 in qualifying cases

Cathay Pacific operates services involving London and Manchester. Qualifying Cathay Pacific-operated departures from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261.

Saudi Arabia

GACA

Passenger rights can apply on qualifying Saudi departures

Cathay Pacific lists Riyadh in its international network, although Riyadh passenger services are currently temporarily suspended. When qualifying Cathay Pacific flights operate from Saudi Arabia, Saudi passenger-rights regulations can apply.

Thailand

CAAT 101

THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases

Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled Cathay Pacific departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

India

India DGCA

Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits

India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

Important conditions

What can affect your eligibility?

Cathay Pacific is a Hong Kong carrier with a large intercontinental network. The same Cathay Pacific passenger can therefore encounter different passenger-rights systems depending on where the journey begins, which airline operates the affected sector and how the itinerary is structured.

Canada journeys can fall under APPR

Cathay Pacific operates directly to Vancouver and Toronto. Qualifying flights to or from Canada can therefore fall within Canada's passenger-rights framework.

EU departures can fall under EC261

Because Cathay Pacific is a non-EU carrier, qualifying departures from EU airports can be protected by EC261 while an inbound Cathay Pacific flight originating outside the EU does not gain protection simply because its destination is in the EU.

UK departures can fall under UK261

Qualifying Cathay Pacific flights departing from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261. Cathay operates services involving both London and Manchester.

Direction of travel matters

A Cathay Pacific flight departing from Europe or the United Kingdom can have different regulatory coverage from the reverse journey departing Hong Kong.

Connections through Hong Kong require the full itinerary

Many Cathay Pacific journeys connect through Hong Kong. Whether the flights were booked together, which sector was disrupted and the resulting final-arrival delay can all matter.

Codeshare and partner flights must be identified

A Cathay Pacific booking can contain flights physically operated by another airline. Passenger-rights coverage can depend on the actual operating carrier of the disrupted sector.

Saudi coverage depends on an operating Saudi departure

Cathay Pacific lists Riyadh in its network, but current Middle East passenger services are temporarily suspended. GACA analysis becomes relevant when a qualifying Cathay Pacific-operated Saudi departure is actually operating.

Türkiye is not a primary Cathay route case

Cathay Pacific does not currently list Türkiye within its own scheduled destination network. If a Cathay booking contains a partner-operated Turkish sector, the actual operating carrier and itinerary should be assessed separately.

Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101

Qualifying scheduled Cathay Pacific departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.

India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules

Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
