KLM compensation guide
The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.
Quick answer
Could your flight qualify?
You may be entitled to compensation for an eligible KLM delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. EC261 can cover qualifying KLM journeys both from and into the European Union, while UK261, APPR, GACA or SHY-YOLCU may also be relevant depending on your route.

Passenger rights
Which passenger rights could apply?
KLM is a Dutch EU airline with a large European and intercontinental network. EC261 is therefore particularly important, while flights involving the United Kingdom, Canada, Saudi Arabia or Türkiye can bring additional passenger-rights frameworks into scope.
European Union
EC261
€250–€600 in qualifying cases
Qualifying KLM flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall under EU passenger-rights rules. Because KLM is an EU carrier, KLM-operated flights arriving into the EU from outside the EU can also fall within EC261.

UK261
£220–£520 in qualifying cases
KLM-operated departures from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261. Because KLM is an EU carrier, qualifying KLM-operated arrivals into the UK from outside the UK can also be covered.

APPR
APPR rights on qualifying Canada routes
Flights to, from and within Canada can fall under Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations, including connecting flights. KLM journeys involving Canada can therefore attract APPR protection where the applicable conditions are met.

GACA
GACA rights on qualifying Saudi departures
KLM-operated flights departing from Saudi Arabian airports can fall under GACA because Saudi passenger-rights rules apply to departures operated by both national and foreign airlines.

SHY-YOLCU
TRY equivalent of €100–€600
Qualifying KLM-operated departures from airports in Türkiye can fall under SHY-YOLCU. The route, disruption type, final arrival impact and operating carrier determine the applicable rights.

CAAT 101
THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases
Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled KLM departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

Mexico LAC
Ticket-price percentages and statutory remedies in qualifying cases
KLM operates passenger services involving Mexico. On qualifying services governed by Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, airline-attributable delays, cancellations and overbooking can trigger statutory assistance, refund or alternative-travel remedies and percentage-based compensation.

India DGCA
Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits
India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

What happened to your KLM flight?
Delayed flight
A significant arrival delay may qualify depending on the route, applicable passenger-rights rules and cause of the disruption.
Cancelled flight
Cancellation rights can depend on notice timing, the reason for cancellation and any alternative journey offered.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can create compensation, alternative travel, refund and care rights in qualifying circumstances.
Missed connection
A connecting journey booked as one itinerary may qualify when a disruption causes you to reach your final destination significantly late.
Important conditions
What can affect your eligibility?
A KLM flight number alone does not determine entitlement. Travaro checks the route, actual operating airline, disruption circumstances and final impact on the journey before applying the relevant passenger-rights rules.
EC261 has broad relevance to KLM
Because KLM is an EU carrier, qualifying flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can be protected, and KLM-operated flights arriving into the EU from outside the EU can also fall within the regulation.
KLM Cityhopper may operate your flight
Many regional KLM services are operated by KLM Cityhopper. The operating carrier shown on the itinerary should be checked alongside the route when assessing passenger-rights coverage.
Codeshare operating carriers matter
A KLM booking can include flights operated by partner airlines. Passenger-rights coverage can depend on which airline actually operated the disrupted flight rather than only the KL flight number shown on the booking.
Final arrival delay can be decisive
For qualifying delay and connecting-flight claims, the important measure can be how late you reached the final destination on the protected itinerary rather than only the delay of one flight segment.
The cause of the disruption matters
Extraordinary circumstances outside the airline's control can remove fixed-compensation entitlement in some cases. Ordinary operational problems and events attributable to the airline can be treated differently.
Cancellation notice timing matters
For EC261 and UK261 cancellation claims, when the airline informed you and what alternative travel was offered can affect whether fixed compensation is payable.
Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101
Qualifying scheduled KLM departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.
Mexico's Civil Aviation Law can apply on qualifying Mexico services
KLM services involving Mexico can also need to be assessed under Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, including the airline's registered compensation policy for attributable delays and the statutory remedies that apply after serious delays, cancellations or overbooking.
India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules
Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
