The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.

Quick answer

Could your flight qualify?

You may be entitled to compensation or other passenger rights after an eligible Korean Air delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. Korean Air serves Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Türkiye, so route, direction of travel and operating carrier are important when determining which rules apply.

Passenger rights

Which passenger rights could apply?

Korean Air is a South Korean airline with a large international network through Seoul Incheon. Its home country alone does not determine your passenger rights. Departure airport, destination, operating carrier, booking structure and direction of travel must all be considered.

Canada

APPR

Compensation can apply in qualifying cases

Korean Air operates services involving Canada, including Toronto and Vancouver. Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations apply broadly to flights to, from and within Canada, so qualifying Korean Air journeys can fall within APPR.

European Union

EC261

€250–€600 in qualifying cases

Korean Air serves major European Union destinations. Qualifying Korean Air-operated flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall under EU passenger-rights rules. Because Korean Air is not an EU carrier, an inbound flight from South Korea is not covered merely because it lands in the EU.

United Kingdom

UK261

£220–£520 in qualifying cases

Korean Air operates services involving London. Qualifying Korean Air-operated departures from UK airports can fall under UK261.

Türkiye

SHY-YOLCU

TRY equivalent of €100–€600

Korean Air operates services involving Istanbul. Qualifying Korean Air-operated departures from Türkiye can therefore fall under SHY-YOLCU, subject to the applicable disruption and eligibility conditions.

Thailand

CAAT 101

THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases

Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled Korean Air departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

India

India DGCA

Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits

India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

Important conditions

What can affect your eligibility?

Korean Air is a non-EU and non-UK carrier with an extensive long-haul network through Seoul Incheon. The same airline can therefore fall under different passenger-rights systems depending on where the affected flight begins, who operates it and how the journey is structured.

Canada journeys can fall under APPR

Korean Air operates services involving Toronto and Vancouver. Qualifying flights to or from Canada can therefore fall within Canada's passenger-rights framework.

EU departures can fall under EC261

Because Korean Air is a non-EU carrier, qualifying departures from EU airports can be protected by EC261. A flight departing South Korea for the EU does not gain EC261 protection solely because it lands in the EU.

UK departures can fall under UK261

Qualifying Korean Air flights departing from the United Kingdom can fall under UK261. Direction of travel remains important because Korean Air is not a UK carrier.

Türkiye departures can fall under SHY-YOLCU

Korean Air operates services involving Istanbul. Qualifying Korean Air-operated departures from Türkiye can therefore bring SHY-YOLCU passenger-rights protections into scope.

Direction of travel matters

A flight departing Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom or Türkiye can have different regulatory coverage from the reverse flight departing South Korea.

Seoul connections need the complete itinerary

Many Korean Air passengers connect through Seoul Incheon. Whether the flights were booked together, which sector was disrupted and the final-arrival delay can all affect the assessment.

The operating carrier must be confirmed

International Korean Air itineraries can include partner-operated sectors. Passenger-rights coverage may depend on the carrier that physically operated the affected flight.

Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101

Qualifying scheduled Korean Air departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.

India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules

Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
