Primary frameworkEU Air Passenger Rights Regulation (EC261)

Other possible rulesUK261, APPR, GACA and SHY-YOLCU on qualifying routes

The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.

Quick answer

Could your flight qualify?

You may be entitled to compensation for an eligible Lufthansa delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. EC261 can cover qualifying Lufthansa departures from the EU and Lufthansa-operated arrivals into the EU, while UK261, APPR, GACA or SHY-YOLCU may also apply depending on your route.

Passenger rights

Which passenger rights could apply?

Lufthansa is an EU airline with an extensive international network. EC261 is therefore particularly important, but flights involving the United Kingdom, Canada, Saudi Arabia or Türkiye can bring additional passenger-rights systems into scope.

European Union

EC261

€250–€600 in qualifying cases

Qualifying Lufthansa-operated flights departing from EU airports can fall under EC261. Because Lufthansa is an EU carrier, qualifying Lufthansa-operated flights arriving in the EU from outside the EU can also be covered.

United Kingdom

UK261

£220–£520 in qualifying cases

Qualifying Lufthansa departures from UK airports can fall under UK261. Because Lufthansa is an EU carrier, qualifying Lufthansa-operated arrivals into the UK from abroad can also be covered depending on the journey.

Canada

APPR

Up to CAD 1,000 in qualifying cases

Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations can apply to qualifying Lufthansa-operated flights to or from Canada. The disruption circumstances, final arrival delay and other APPR conditions determine entitlement.

Saudi Arabia

GACA

About SAR 255–765 for qualifying delay cases

GACA passenger-rights regulations can apply to qualifying Lufthansa departures from Saudi Arabian airports because Saudi departure protections apply to foreign as well as national airlines.

Türkiye

SHY-YOLCU

TRY equivalent of €100–€600

Qualifying Lufthansa-operated departures from airports in Türkiye can fall under SHY-YOLCU. Lufthansa is a foreign carrier in Türkiye, so direction of travel is important.

Thailand

CAAT 101

THB 1,500–4,500 in qualifying cases

Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101 can apply to qualifying scheduled Lufthansa departures from Thailand. The disruption type, delay length, flight distance and other regulatory conditions determine the available rights.

Mexico

Mexico LAC

Ticket-price percentages and statutory remedies in qualifying cases

Lufthansa operates passenger services involving Mexico. On qualifying services governed by Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, airline-attributable delays, cancellations and overbooking can trigger statutory assistance, refund or alternative-travel remedies and percentage-based compensation.

India

India DGCA

Fare-based compensation subject to INR limits

India’s DGCA passenger-rights rules can apply to qualifying flights within, to or from India, including flights operated by foreign airlines. Delay may create assistance rights without a standalone fixed cash award; some cancellations, involuntary denied boarding and qualifying missed connections have separate conditions and statutory fare-based limits. The actual operating carrier, dates and disruption facts must be checked.

Important conditions

What can affect your eligibility?

Lufthansa's EU carrier status gives EC261 particularly broad relevance, but the airline name alone does not determine entitlement. Travaro checks the route, direction of travel, actual operating carrier, disruption circumstances and final arrival impact.

EU departures can fall under EC261

Qualifying Lufthansa flights departing from airports covered by EC261 can fall within the regulation regardless of the destination.

Lufthansa arrivals into the EU can also be covered

Because Lufthansa is an EU carrier, qualifying Lufthansa-operated flights arriving in the EU from outside the EU can also fall under EC261.

UK journeys can bring UK261 into scope

Qualifying Lufthansa departures from the UK can fall under UK261, and Lufthansa's EU carrier status can also matter for qualifying inbound UK journeys.

Canada routes can bring APPR into scope

Canada's passenger-rights rules can apply to Lufthansa journeys to and from Canada, subject to the relevant APPR conditions.

Saudi departures can bring GACA into scope

Qualifying Lufthansa-operated flights departing from Saudi Arabia can fall under GACA passenger-rights regulations.

Türkiye departures can bring SHY-YOLCU into scope

Lufthansa is a foreign carrier in Türkiye, so qualifying Lufthansa departures from Turkish airports can fall within SHY-YOLCU.

The operating carrier matters

A Lufthansa flight number can sometimes be attached to a flight operated by another airline. Passenger-rights coverage should be assessed using the actual operating carrier.

Final arrival delay can be decisive

For eligible delays and protected connecting itineraries, compensation can depend on how late you ultimately reached your final destination.

Cancellation timing matters

Entitlement can change depending on when you were notified about a cancellation, why it happened and what alternative travel Lufthansa offered.

Extraordinary circumstances can affect compensation

Severe weather, air-traffic restrictions and other genuine events outside Lufthansa's control can affect fixed-compensation entitlement, although other passenger rights may remain.

Thailand departures can fall under CAAT 101

Qualifying scheduled Lufthansa departures from Thailand can be assessed under Thailand's CAAT Regulation No. 101. Delay length, disruption type, distance and other regulatory conditions still need to be checked.

Mexico's Civil Aviation Law can apply on qualifying Mexico services

Lufthansa services involving Mexico can also need to be assessed under Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, including the airline's registered compensation policy for attributable delays and the statutory remedies that apply after serious delays, cancellations or overbooking.

India journeys are assessed under DGCA rules

Qualifying departures and arrivals involving India, and domestic flights within India, require a DGCA assessment. Delay assistance is different from capped cancellation or denied-boarding compensation; the operating airline, advance notice and alternative travel matter.
