The airline name alone does not determine your rights. Route, operating carrier and disruption details matter.

Quick answer

Could your flight qualify?

You may be entitled to compensation for an eligible SunExpress delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. SHY-YOLCU can apply to qualifying SunExpress flights from or to Türkiye, while EC261, UK261 and GACA may also become relevant depending on your route and direction of travel.

Passenger rights

Which passenger rights could apply?

SunExpress is a Turkish airline with a large network connecting Türkiye with Europe and the United Kingdom. That makes SHY-YOLCU especially important, while qualifying departures from the European Union, United Kingdom or Saudi Arabia can bring additional passenger-rights rules into consideration.

Important conditions

What can affect your eligibility?

The SunExpress name alone does not determine what you may be owed. Travaro checks the route, direction of travel, actual operating airline, cause of the disruption and your final arrival time before determining which passenger-rights rules may apply.

SunExpress departures from Türkiye can fall under SHY-YOLCU

Qualifying SunExpress departures from Turkish airports are covered by Türkiye's passenger-rights rules.

SunExpress arrivals into Türkiye can also be covered

Because SunExpress is a Turkish airline, qualifying SunExpress-operated flights arriving in Türkiye can also fall under SHY-YOLCU.

EU departures can bring EC261 into scope

A SunExpress flight departing from an EU airport can fall under EC261 even though SunExpress itself is not an EU airline.

Lufthansa ownership does not make SunExpress an EU airline

SunExpress is jointly owned by Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, but the operating airline is Turkish. For EC261, the route and actual operating airline matter more than the nationality of a shareholder.

UK departures can bring UK261 into scope

A SunExpress flight departing from a UK airport can fall under UK261. The opposite direction must be assessed differently because SunExpress is not a UK or EU airline.

Saudi departures can bring GACA into scope

GACA covers qualifying flights departing Saudi airports operated by national or foreign airlines, including SunExpress where it operates the affected flight.

The operating airline matters

SunExpress can sell codeshare journeys where another airline operates the aircraft. Check the 'Operated by' information because passenger-rights coverage can change with the actual operating airline.

Final arrival delay matters

For qualifying delays and protected connecting journeys, the time you ultimately reached your final destination can be particularly important.

Cancellation notice and cause matter

Your rights can change depending on when SunExpress informed you, why the cancellation occurred and what replacement travel was offered.

Events outside the airline's control can affect compensation

Severe weather, air-traffic restrictions and other genuine events outside the airline's control can affect fixed-compensation eligibility, although other passenger rights may remain.

What to keep

Keep a clear record of the journey

Keep records that establish the complete journey, which airline actually operated the affected flight, what happened and when you ultimately reached your destination.

Your SunExpress booking confirmation and complete itinerary.

Boarding passes or e-tickets for every affected segment.

The SunExpress flight number and scheduled departure date.

Any 'Operated by' information for codeshare or connecting flights.

SunExpress emails, text messages or app notifications about the disruption.

Any explanation provided for the delay, cancellation or denied boarding.

The time you were informed about a cancellation or schedule change.

Replacement-flight or alternative-travel details.

Your actual arrival time at the final destination.

Itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation or local transport where relevant.
