Quick answer

Could your flight qualify?

You may be entitled to compensation for an eligible WestJet delay, cancellation, involuntary denied boarding or disrupted connection. Flights to, from and within Canada can fall under the APPR. WestJet also operates flights to the United Kingdom and European Union, so UK261 or EC261 can apply on qualifying journeys depending on the direction of travel.

Passenger rights

Which passenger rights could apply?

WestJet is a Canadian airline, but Canadian rules are not necessarily the only passenger-rights framework relevant to a WestJet journey. WestJet operates routes between Canada and both the United Kingdom and European Union, making the direction of travel important.

Important conditions

What can affect your eligibility?

A WestJet flight number does not by itself determine compensation. Travaro checks the complete journey, direction of travel, operating carrier and disruption circumstances before applying the relevant passenger-rights rules.

The operating carrier matters

WestJet bookings can include partner-operated flights. Passenger-rights coverage can depend on which airline actually operated the disrupted segment, not simply which airline sold the ticket.

The route determines the legal framework

A journey to, from or within Canada can fall under APPR. A WestJet-operated departure from an EU or UK airport can also bring EC261 or UK261 into scope.

Direction of travel matters in Europe

Because WestJet is a Canadian carrier, a WestJet-operated flight departing Europe can fall under European or UK rules while the corresponding WestJet-operated flight from Canada into Europe may not.

Final arrival delay can determine the amount

For qualifying APPR delay and cancellation claims, compensation depends on how late you ultimately arrive at the final destination shown on the original ticket.

The cause of the disruption matters

Under APPR, fixed compensation for delay or cancellation generally requires the disruption to be within the airline's control and not required for safety. Events outside the airline's control are treated differently.

Connections can be assessed as one journey

If your flights form a protected connecting itinerary, disruption on an earlier segment can be relevant when it causes you to reach the final destination significantly late.

Mexico's Civil Aviation Law can apply on qualifying Mexico services

WestJet services involving Mexico can also need to be assessed under Mexico's Civil Aviation Law, including the airline's registered compensation policy for attributable delays and the statutory remedies that apply after serious delays, cancellations or overbooking.

What to keep

Keep a clear record of the journey

Keep records that establish the full itinerary, operating carrier, disruption reason and final arrival time. These details can determine both which passenger-rights framework applies and the compensation amount.

Your booking confirmation showing the complete itinerary and ticket details.

Boarding passes or other proof of travel for each flight segment.

The operating airline and flight number for the disrupted segment, especially on a codeshare or partner journey.

WestJet emails, text messages or app notifications showing the delay or cancellation.

Any explanation WestJet provided for the cause of the disruption.

Details and timings of any replacement flight or rerouting offered.

Your actual arrival time at the final destination.

Itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation or local transport expenses where relevant.
